Are there any free quilt patterns that can be downloaded and printed out?

April 26th, 2010 · Quilt Patterns, Quilting Tips

I have almost all traditional patterns in quilt magazines but am looking for different more modern patterns without a catch to buy, is there a place that I can go to ? Even different variations of old patterns/colors could work for me. Thanks

Does anyone have tips on picture transferring for quilt squares?

April 26th, 2010 · Quilting Tips

We prefer not to use the iron on method. We would like to try the fabric sheets 8.5 x 11 that you can run through the bubble jet printer. Has anyone used this method and are there any tips or favorite brands of fabric sheets?

Would you know any software that converts pictures into patchwork patterns?

April 28th, 2010 · For Quilting, Paper Piecing, Patchwork, Quilt Contest, Quilt Patterns, Quilting, Quilting Fabric, Quilting News, Quilting Tips

I am familiar with software that converts photos into cross-stitch designs and was wondering if there would be something like that for patchwork or quilting. The pictures I would like to convert are abstract/graphic works of art, which should not require as much editing as photographs, I think.

Keepsake Quilting Turns Memories Into Family Treasures

April 29th, 2010 · For Quilting

Keepsake quilting is one of the most popular reasons people begin to learn the craft. Maybe a daughter is getting married, or a first grandchild is on the way. Both wedding and births are popular occasions to give a keepsake quilt. But where do you start if you are new to quilting all together?

There are plenty of sources to help beginners get into keepsake quilting. Check the books in your local library. Another great source is the Internet. Look for quilting clubs that offer quilting demonstrations online for a little extra help.

Perhaps the easiest way to start your keepsake quilting project is to select the design or pattern you want to use. The “Double Wedding Ring” pattern is popular for weddings and anniversaries. Simple patchwork quilts are easy to make for babies. Other popular keepsake quilts for babies and children are “Sunbonnet Sue” and “Overall Sam” designs.

If you are making your first quilt, you might not be aware of level of difficulty of the patterns you are searching through. Don’t worry about it. You will be happier with the results if you complete the quilt of your choice than if you settled for something strictly of beginner status.

Once you have selected your keepsake quilting pattern, you will need to select fabrics. If you don’t have a color scheme in mind, ask for some help at your local fabric store. Take the pattern with you and ask a sales clerk for help. If you are shopping in a fabric department from a large retail chain, keep in mind that all clerks might not have the same knowledge of fabrics.

Don’t forget the necessary notions, too. You will need thread for piecing your keepsake quilt and thread for quilting the project. Your project will also require batting – which comes in various thicknesses.

If you don’t already have a good pair of scissors to use for cutting fabric, make sure you invest in those. You might choose to use a rotary cutter for your keepsake quilting project. Regardless, it is still important to have a good pair of scissors as part of your quilting gear.

Perhaps you have some quilting experience, but want to make a truly unique keepsake quilt. There are several ways to achieve that. Try a t-shirt quilt. Use favorite old t-shirts to make a quilt that will be a fun way to recall favorite memories for years to come.

If you are making a wedding keepsake quilt, incorporate fabrics and laces from the dress into the quilt. Pieces snipped from the flower girl’s sash, ribbon from the bouquest and color swatches that match the wedding colors would be nice pieces to work into your keepsake wedding quilt.

Photo quilts make great keepsake quilts for children on their way to college or leaving for a job out on their own for the first time. There are plenty of ways to transfer photos to fabrics, and many will last years without much fading. Read up on various techniques and decide which is best for your keepsake quilting project. Digital direct to garment printing offers one option. Since the technology is fairly new, finding a digital printer might be difficult and the process a little more costly than doing the photo as a transfer yourself. But the long-lasting results make the process worth considering.

The important thing to remember when making a keepsake quilt is not to worry or stress over minor imperfections. Focus, instead, on the memories your project will capture. The recipient of your keepsake quilt will be proud to receive your labor of love!

What is the best quilting software out there?

April 30th, 2010 · Quilting

Please tell me what options the various software packages have, their advantages, and their prices… I’m looking for a Christmas present and will greatly appreciate any feedback. Note: I know nothing about quilting. I’m still learning the difference between a blanket and a quilt.

Thanks!

Understanding Thread Counts And The Difference It Makes

July 4th, 2010 · Thread

A generation ago, no home maker worried about thread counts!

Thread counts have become one of the deciding factors for many people when they’re buying bed linens today though. The truth about thread counts may seem a bit difficult to understand. It doesn’t have to! More than just the thread count affects how bedding feels and how comfortable you will be when sleeping with it on your bed. Let’s check into this alittle bit. Then you can make informed decisions about your bedding when you’re ready to purchase again.

Our grandparents and parents slept on lower thread count cotton sheets and did just fine, right? These sheets were serviceable, but could feel abit thin and unsubstantial by our standards these days.

Today, bed linens can be found from a lowly 120 thread count up to as high as 1200. Who knows, maybe even higher soon!

Is all this talk about thread counts much ado about nothing? Well, the answer is yes and no. Thread count alone will not tell you how bedding will feel to the touch or how well it will hold up over long years of use.

The feel of bedding, what the sheets feel like on your skin, is known as “hand” or “handle”. The hand of the bedding does have something to do with thread count, but that’s not the only factor. The way the bedding is woven and the content of the fabric have a lot to do with the hand of the bedding. The character, or individuality of a material includes how the fabric drapes, the elasticity, softness and fineness of how that particular sheet feels.

The ply is a factor that defines the number of single yards which are twisted to become the ply yard from which the bedding is woven. By twisting these single yards together to form the ply yard, the fabric is more resilient and long lasting. The ply yarns are twisted together to form cord- and the cord is the actual material used in the weaving process.

Finish is another characteristic of bedding which affects how it will feel to the skin.
Percale is a plain weave of cotton or polyester/cotton blended yarns. This finish usually uses a higher thread count and a finer yarn.
Sateen is another finish for cotton fabric that is woven in such as way that the surface is smooth and lustrous, reminding us of satin.
Flannel is a brushed fiber finish which is quite warm, soft and cuddly- it can be created from 100% cotton fibers or a polyester/cotton blend.

Now that we know a bit about what makes one sheet different from another sheet, let’s get the facts go back to the facts about thread count.
The actual definition of thread count is the number of threads per square inch of fabric going horizontal and vertical.
Generally speaking, the higher thread count materials will have softer textures- or hands.
However, the bedding has to be viewed from an overall standpoint and take into account the fabric composition and the finish to determine how soft a sheet will actually be.

The most favored thread counts in bed linens today are in the 200 to 600 range. The best combination of softness and durability are found in this range.

However, a 200 thread count cotton sheet woven with a sateen finish can be softer and more luxurious feeling than a 400 or 600 count sheet of standard cotton in a plain weave.
Egyptian cotton, which has a longer fiber than other cottons, when woven into a 200 thread count sateen finish sheet may feel more luxurious and softer than either of the other choices.

Single ply sheets of top quality cotton may feel more luxurious than double ply sheets. The only real means of rating how a sheet will feel to you is to touch it.

Look for what features are most important to you when selecting your next set of bed linens.

If you want few or no wrinkles, choose a polyester/cotton blend. Less crisp, less cool than cotton.

If you like the feel of satin or silk, but don’t like sliding off the bed, choose a 100% cotton sateen weave. =)

If you like the extra warm feel of flannel, select brushed cotton or flannel finish- but be aware that this weave often pills quickly after only a few washings. (Look for the highest ounce weight fabric you can find to minimize this).
Percale often softens more and more as it is washed again and again. Simple, elegant, cool.
Egyptian cotton is King, with the longest cotton fibers available to date. Supima cotton is also excellent, with a tiny bit shorter fiber length. Either of them becomes softer and even more sumptuous with each washing! You can’t go wrong no matter what with either.

It’s important to choose bed linens that you find feel good to you rather than select based on some designer theory of thread count.
So, don’t be taken in by a high price tag. Just because a sheet costs a lot doesn’t necessarily mean it will feel any better than a less expensive sheet.

I wanna purchase a sewing machine…?

May 15th, 2010 · Quilting Machine Reviews

the sewing machine i have now is a brother that my mom bought second-hand about 20-ish years ago and we have never brought it to a shop, or oiled it or any maintenance type stuff. it’s starting to freak out though, and it skips and bunches alot so that’s why i’m looking for a new machine. at first, i was just gunna jump on in and buy the cheapest one with the best reviews on like walmart or jo-anns…then i started researching more. some more experienced people said it’s better to go with pre-owned, second hand machines. there were blogs and blogs about antique retro machines that once belonged to their moms or grandmothers. i poked around a bit more and read other stuff about tune-ups and embroidery and that if it’s only a hobby machine, i need a straight zig-ziag…
so i wanna know, if i’m not quite a beginner but definitely not an intermediate seamstress [?], and sew mainly for hobby, what kind of machine should i get? should i look around in thrift shops or just bag a cheap one offa target? what features should i be looking for if i’m not into embroidery and more advanced projects? and what’s a tune-up and where do you get one?
