Janome or Brother sewing machine?

I am a beginner & I am debating on what sewing machine to get between the Janome http://www.overstock.com/Crafts-Sewing/Janome-11574-Heavy-duty-Sewing-Machine-Refurbished/3644290/product.html or the Brother http://www.overstock.com/Crafts-Sewing/Brother-CE4000-Heavy-duty-Sewing-Machine-Refurbished/3485980/product.html
I like the Janome bc I hear its an amazing brand & the reviews say it is really heavy duty! But I saw someone review it & said that there is no speed control or needle up-down. This is going to be my only machine & I wanted to know if those features are important enough to look into another machine. I also wanted to know what is twin needle sewing? The Brother offers that but the Janome doesnt.
I asked this question b4 but no one answered it!
I live in a small town & the nearest sewing machine dealer is 30 minutes away!

What is a good pattern for handing quilting flying geese?

I have made a quilt for Christmas in a flying geese pattern. Now I just need to quilt it. I don’t know what a good “pattern” is to do the hand quilting. I have looked online and haven’t gotten any ideas.
